Men's Support and Share

Doing What’s Needed

As our nation and the world battles the Covid-19 pandemic, many of us are experiencing changes that are shifting the way we live and the way we perceive the world around us. People are losing their jobs, losing loved ones and potentially, losing their sense of identity within society. As unique as these problems are for each individual, in one way or another, everyone is being impacted by this pandemic. Each demographic will be impacted differently, and it is necessary that these groups share their stories to normalize, understand, and solve their problems together. Unity and togetherness can seem impossible with social distancing, but with the help of technology, Las Vegas Counseling Center now offers group therapy sessions online.

Hello, my name is Joseph Daniel Lopez. I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with a minor in Marriage Family Therapy from the University of Las Vegas, and later obtained my Master of Arts in Marriage Family Therapy from Chapman University. I am currently a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Intern, with a dual Intern license as a Drug and Alcohol Counselor. As described above, many of us fall into groups that experience unique problems in the midst of this pandemic. Speaking for myself, I found it difficult dealing with the fact that I could not fully protect my loved ones. As a male, I have always had a strong desire to protect. Yet, how could I protect my family from a threat that I cannot see or from other people who may not be taking this pandemic seriously? To address this issue, I utilized the coping mechanisms I learned from my practicum training at Chapman University to help me learn how to give up control.

Doing so allowed me to get a better hold over my emotions and thus, control over my well-being.

What also helped me was talking things out with other strong male figures in my life, such as my father. With my training and personal experience background, I am offering an all men's group in an effort to create an open dialogue about the numerous problems we all face as men during this time.
